A powerful and expressive contemporary terracotta sculpture by Michel Wohlfahrt (b. 1949, Alsace, France). This tall, elegant figure embodies motion and emotion through its dynamic posture and subtle modeling—typical of Wohlfahrt’s poetic and deeply human sculptural language.
Each of Wohlfahrt’s characters seems suspended between movement and stillness, as if caught in a moment of transformation. In every gesture, one senses a dance, an impulse, a cry, or a fleeting turn, revealing both tension and grace within the clay.
For over fifty years, Wohlfahrt has remained faithful to the earth as his medium. Before becoming a sculptor, he was a highly regarded potter, traveling from northeastern France to southern Tunisia, working with different clays and techniques. Eventually, he turned away from traditional pottery to devote himself entirely to sculpture—driven by a desire for freedom, spontaneity, and expressive depth.
His figures, developed over three decades, reflect a lifetime of experience and emotion: austerity, humor, perfection, sorrow, absurdity, tenderness, and compassion. Wohlfahrt paints his terracotta and bronze pieces in luminous, contrasting tones, transforming the raw material and emphasizing volume, rhythm, and movement.
Since 1978, Michel Wohlfahrt’s work has been featured in museums, public gardens, and private collections throughout France and Europe, establishing him as one of the distinctive voices in contemporary French sculpture.
