Louis Christiaan Kalff is a graphic designer and a great Dutch designer of the 20th century. He is seen as one of the pioneers of industrial design. Kalff is the designer of the iconic and timeless Z table lamp produced by Philips in 1955. He is behind the great success of the famous household appliance company's range of luminaires.

Biography

Kalff was born in Holland in 1897. He studied at the Technical University of Delf where he developed his knowledge and skills in object design, sculpture, architecture and ceramics. In 1924, he joined the advertising department of the famous household appliance brand Philips. He stands out for the quality of his work and quickly acquires more and more responsibilities: he is the creator of the brand's logo! Five years after joining, he founded the Philips lighting design studio and then became the artistic director of the company. Along with this, he designs posters, book covers and advertisements for different companies. He was even responsible for the lighting department at the World Exhibition in Barcelona, ​​Paris and Antwerp.
