Joseph HUVEY Oil on Canvas "Bords de Durance" 1880 - Ref 09706

Joseph Huvey was born on April 28th, 1844 in the hamlet of Belmont in the municipality of Chavanoz (Isère), died in Lyon on April 24th, 1919.

His father, Benjamin, works in the factory of wires of the Forge de Belmont where he practises his knowledge and his acquired experience in the factories of needles of L'Aigle (Orne), city of which he is native.

Her mother, Jeanne Daviet, takes care alone of her still young three children.

Joseph is brought up and trained in this industrial environment where next to his technical knowledge show themselves a capacity and a very sure taste for the drawing. At the age of twenty, he manages a factory of needles and settles down rue du Pont de la Gare in Lyon, in a rapidly growing district between the station of water and the railroad station of Vaise.

The war of 1870 arises. Joseph is incorporated into the 1st Légion de Mobilisés of the Rhône. In December, 1870 and January, 1871, he participates with them in the fights of Châteauneuf-en-Auxois (Côte-d'Or), Nuits-Saint-Georges (Côte-d'Or), Villersexel (Haute-Saône) and finally Héricourt (Haute-Saône). After this last battle, the Legion of the Rhône follows the Bourbaki Army in its retreat until Switzerland where the soldiers are interned before their liberation a few months later.

Le Mont-Blanc

So, he will have seen nothing of the Commune de Lyon and the revolutionary demonstrations which shook the city between September 28th, 1870 and May 1st, 1871.

Did Joseph Huvey take his seat back within the factory ? Did he work at Teste Father and Son in Vaise ? These questions stay at the moment without answer.

Doubtless giving in to a former passion, served well by the talent and the experience, he returns in 1872 to the School of Fine Arts of Lyon, seat of the famous School of paint of Lyon.

There he learns to bring an extreme care to materials and to their implementation. His paintings will always show the trace of a meticulous execution. His theme of preference will be the landscape, the rustic, wild and pure nature. He will be particularly seduced by the Savoyard landscapes with their peaks, their gorges, their lakes, their glaciers and the incomparable light which halos them.

He lives then 12, rue Bodin.

He gets noticed for the first time in 1873 in the Exposition des Amis des Arts Lyon. Until 1913 he will be very rarely absent of the annual show. From his marriage with Françoise Accary in 1887, he becomes established 113 boulevard ode la Croix-Rousse.

Joseph Huvey is often mistaken for Louis Huvey. However manners, techniques and... talents are not the same
